Pillar 3 – Ways to Express Emotion
About the event
This session is part of the Grief Academy course Julia Samuel’s Pillars of Strength.
Grief can involve a wide range of emotions, from guilt and sadness to numbness and fear. None of these feelings is wrong, and each serves a purpose as we learn to live with what has happened to us. As Julia observes, ‘pain is the agent of change’ and it is by allowing ourselves to grieve that we begin to process our loss. It can help to find ways to connect with our emotions, name what we feel, and then find a way to express it. Expressing our grief can take many forms, including talking to a friend, journaling, making art or creating a ritual.
In this session, Julia covers:
- Why do we have emotions and what happens when we block them?
- How does our fear system work? What tools might help us regulate it?
- What are some healthy ways to express feelings?
- How can creative activities help us express our feelings and our ongoing connection with the person who died?
Julia Samuel’s Pillars of Strength offers immediate access to eight recorded webinars – and accompanying resources – on demand for six months.
