Landscapes of Loss: Place, Memory, Belonging
About the event
What happens when the ground beneath us changes? Where do we turn when grief shatters our sense of safety, and unsettles our sense of home?
In this conversation, authors Fiona Robertson and Sophie Pierce explore how particular landscapes can shape the way we grieve, and how place can become a source of steadiness and connection. Fiona found solace travelling among Britain’s prehistoric standing stones after her husband Stephen was diagnosed with incurable cancer. Sophie, meanwhile, wrote letters to her son Felix during walks and swims near his burial place by the River Dart, keeping their relationship alive through a shared bond with the land.
Guided by grief educator Lizzie Pickering, the panel reflects on how moving through familiar and unfamiliar places can help us orient ourselves in a life reshaped by loss.
