Sophie Pierce
Sophie Pierce is a writer with a passionate interest in our emotional connection to natural landscapes. Her memoir, The Green Hill: Letters to a Son, explores this topic in the context of traumatic bereavement. It was written after the sudden and unexpected death of her 20 year old son Felix in 2017. Sophie is also the co-author, with her husband Alex Murdin, of Rock Idols: A Guide to Dartmoor in 28 Tors (Wild Things Publishing, April 2025), and 5 wild swimming guides (with Matt Newbury; the latest, Wild Swimming Walks Exmoor and North Devon, came out in 2024). Until 2020 she was a radio and TV reporter for BBC South West, and had a varied career spanning over 20 years, covering stories on everything from natural disasters through to political scandals and skateboarding ducks. In October 2022 Sophie co-led a residential memoir course with fellow writer Tanya Shadrick, for the literary charity the Charles Causley Trust.
The paperback of The Green Hill will be published on 23rd April 2026.
