When grief gets complicated – Dealing with challenging bereavements (GP course session 2)
About the event
This session is part of the Grief Academy course ‘Grief and Bereavement in Primary Care’.
Building on the first session, this session will explore ways to support patients experiencing atypical, complex grief. In conversation with course facilitator Dr Sheena Sharma, Julia Samuel MBE – one of the UK’s foremost psychotherapists and grief experts – will discuss trauma, Prolonged Grief Disorder, and the range of support options available.
Key Topics:
- Grief and Trauma: How grief interacts with trauma, and how to recognise and respond to its effects.
- Sudden Deaths, Suicide and Children’s Deaths: Strategies to help patients and families who have experienced particularly challenging bereavements and may need extra support.
- Prolonged Grief Disorder: Ways to support patients with severe grief reactions, including Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD).
- Support and Signposting: The range of services available – including in-person and online support groups and organisations which support specific groups of bereaved people – and how to signpost patients to the support that is right for them.
