Identity and equity: Culture, ethnicity, religion, sexuality (GP course session 4)
About the event
This session is part of the Grief Academy course ‘Grief and Bereavement in Primary Care’.
This session will explore how an individual’s cultural background, ethnicity, religion and sexuality influence their experiences of grief and the support they need. Dr Sheena Sharma and Andy Langford (Clinical Director of Cruse Bereavement Support) will also discuss disenfranchised grief and the barriers that some people face when accessing bereavement support.
Key Topics:
- Cultural Factors that Affect Grief: How cultural background, ethnicity, religion, gender identity and sexuality shape experiences of grief – and influence the kinds of support that will help most.
- Disenfranchised Grief: How to recognise and respond to a bereavement that is not acknowledged or socially supported.
- Inequities in Bereavement Care: Common barriers to accessing bereavement support services, and strategies to ensure patient needs are recognised and met.
- Individualised Support: How to tailor support to individual needs and preferences, including specific services that might be helpful.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Describe the role of religion and cultural background in bereavement support
- Define disenfranchised grief and its consequences
- Outline how to tailor bereavement support to individual preferences and needs
