About the event

The presentation will explore the Voicing Loss study and its implications for policy and practice. Conducted by the Institute for Crime and Justice Policy Research (Birkbeck, University of London) and the Centre for Death and Society (University of Bath), this was an empirical study, which involved interviews with bereaved people, coronial professionals, and individuals who had given evidence to an inquest in a professional capacity. The main aim of the research was to examine the role of bereaved people in the coronial process, as defined in law and policy and experienced in practice. It also considered how the inclusion and participation of bereaved people in the process can be better supported.

Jessica Jacobson is Professor of Criminal Justice at Birkbeck, University of London, where she is based in the Institute for Crime & Justice Policy Research. Her research and publications span many aspects of justice including prisons, sentencing, criminal investigations, and lay participation in judicial proceedings. She recently led the ESRC-funded project Voicing Loss, which examined bereaved people’s experiences of the coronial process.

This event is part of a new seminar series organised by the Bristol Centre for Grief Research and Engagement, in association with Good Grief Festival.

The seminar will be online and we will send the link to all registered attendees around 24 hours before the start time. If you have any questions, please email: [email protected]
